I've just passed my driving test about 6 weeks ago and so far I've done almost 1.200 kms on my second-hand savage.
The exhaust was shiny silver when I wakened my bike from it's winter-in-the-garage sleep. The first rides out I let the engine run warm before driving off and to get some practice I drove through city traffic quite a lot. The exhaust changed it's colour within just weeks.
Now that I drive more country roads at higher speed the pipe doesn't change it's colour as quickly as it did in the beginning.
So probably the best way to keep your pipe as good as new is to give your savage a good cruise through cool driving wind.
